CHECKLIST & FAQ’s FOR ARTISTS' CONSIDERATION

CLAYWORKERS’ GUILD WORKSHOPS

v                 WHERE ARE YOUR WORKSHOPS HELD?   McHenry County College.

v                 WHERE IS MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE LOCATED?   MCC is located approximately 50 miles

northwest of Chicago in Crystal Lake, IL. (Click here for an interactive map.)

v                 DATES AGREED ON:

Most of our workshops are two-day events - Friday & Saturday of the agreed upon week -- Usually the artist arrives on Thursday before the workshop (Friday & Saturday)  to get situated, see the facilities and take care of any pre-workshop prep.  Thursday  evening, the Guild usually holds a pre-workshop potluck for the artist (informal) to meet some of the Guild members.

v                 FEE THEY CHARGE?   Cost per day (we pay for transportation and accommodations)

v                 STANDARD CONTRACT: HAVE THEIR OWN?  NEEDS OURS? Click here  for sample contract

v                 DRIVING?      FLYING?  (Need to let us know schedule—we pick the artist(s) up)

v                 STAYING AT HOTEL? If so, what do they need?  CWG MEMBERS HOME? Some of the artists

who have done workshops with us have friends in the Guild they prefer to  stay with.

v                 SCHEDULE THEY WOULD LIKE REGARDING EACH DAY?

--- Also will they be flying out on Sat. or Sun.?

Usually the demonstrations run from 9a or 10a till 12:30p with an hour-hour and a half break for lunch, then resume at 1:30p or 2:00p till about 4p-4:30p on both Friday and Saturday.  Many artists choose to do slide presentations at some point (the college is fully equipped for this).

v                 WOULD LIKE TO GO OUT WITH CWG MEMBERS AFTER WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY?

Saturday evening, the Guild usually takes the artist out for a post-workshop dinner & celebration.

v                 SPECIAL DIETARY NEEDS?

v                 DO THEY HAVE AN ASSISTANT?   NEED TO NEGOTIATE ?

v                 NEEDS HELP ON STAGE?       Runners, wedgers, other?  Guild supplies helpers

v                 SUPPLIES NEEDED E.G.…..Wheel, number of tables, equipment, projector, etc….?

Great Lakes Clay provides all clay, we have Brent CXC wheels, bats, slab roller, etc.

v                 DO THEY HAVE PUBLICITY SHOTS  & DISPLAYS AVAILABLE?

Black & white? Color? – For advertisement purpose we would need these as soon as possible to advertise  (Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, Newspapers, Internet sites, Mailings to past workshop attendees & other colleges, etc.)  Display pots are also requested (when possible) for further advertisement at the college.  8-10 pots are recommended depending on the size.

v                 DO THEY WANT A SALE OF THEIR POTS AT THE END OF THE WORKSHOP?

Although sales are the artist’s responsibility the Guild has always assisted with this, and most artists bring pots for sale.  The sales are 100% the artists’ (we take no percentage unless the Guild is assisting -- then we take a modest 10%) and our attendees tend to be enthusiastic customers.

v                 NEED OUR HELP WITH SALES?  Again, the Guild will gladly assist with this (we do this for 10%) .

v                 IS PHOTOGRAPHY ACCEPTABLE?  THE GUILD?  ATTENDEES?

The Guild usually photographs each workshop and  generally allows attendees to take photographs.

v                 IS VIDEOTAPING ACCEPTABLE?    THE GUILD?  ATTENDEES?

The Guild usually videotapes each workshop.  These are NOT for sale.

(Sometimes attendees express an interest in  videotaping.)

v                 STAGING?

For workshops in the Conference Center, the Guild televises each workshop within the auditorium.  (For workshops in the pottery studio this is a smaller venue and so televising is unnecessary.) This requires the use of a stage video-camera and microphone.  Are there other staging needs for the artist?  Tea, water, fans, other? (Click here to see photographs from some  past workshops.  It might give you an idea of  how this might work for you.)

v                 DEMO POTS?

Usually the Guild retains the pots created at the demonstrations and bisque-fires them for stability, but does not glaze them.  They are then displayed in the college pottery department for inspiration.  They are for viewing only and are NOT for sale.
